Growing Gardens and Friendships Since 1949.
Our Story
The Blue Ridge Garden Club of Boone was founded in 1949 with sixteen members. Almost 75 years later, the club has incorporated and is still very active.
The club sprung out of the Worthwhile Women’s Club with a small founding group of just sixteen women. In 1959 the Daniel Boone Native Gardens was created by the club as BRGC aimed to promote horticulture in the Boone community, promote the town and roadside beautification, and protect and aid the conservation of local natural resources.
The club’s focus in the local community, civic, and environmental appeal, allows for our members to get involved and give back through projects such as litter sweep, hospital flower arrangements, recycling projects and more.
From monthly community programming events to volunteer and fundraising opportunities, there are many ways to get involved in helping us in our effort to beautify Boone.
Something for Everyone
Meetings are held monthly from April-December with a variety of curated programs covering topics from gardening skills to local non-profit efforts and small businesses working to protect and respect the horticulture community.
Members contribute a yearly membership fee to support expenses, such as plants for the gardens, program costs, and other unexpected expenses.
There are five civic gardens throughout the Town of Boone which are cared for. Each garden has its own committee of members volunteering to maintain the gardens.
Our Community Gardens
King Street Garden
King Street Garden is located between Queen and King Streets on the west side of downtown Boone, to the right of Clement Law offices. In 2023, this garden was certified as a North Carolina pollinator garden.
Greer Garden
A stone planter was constructed at the edge of an island plot in the parking area outside the Daniel Boone Native Gardens near the front Gate House. Here spring flowering bulbs, perennials and annuals have blossomed over the years by the work done from members of the Blue Ridge Garden Club of Boone since 1971.
This garden was designed and dedicated in memory of Mrs. W. C. Greer, a founding member of Blue Ridge Garden Club and horticulturist. She was known for always being a gracious hostess and opening her home for many club events. She died November 18, 1970 and her memorial garden was dedicated in her memory in 1971.
Two additional planters have been added and attached on either side of the original stone planter and gardeners from Blue Ridge Garden Club have kept this garden tended and blooming for over 50 years.
Vivan Reynolds Garden
The Vivian Reynolds Garden is located near the beginning of Boone Greenway, next to the covered bridge. The Town of Boone dedicated the three mile Greenway to Vivian and husband, Lee, for all their years of beautifying the community. Vivian loved gardening and flowers and in 1949 helped organize the Boone Garden Club (currently called the Blue Ridge Garden Club). At one point Vivian and Lee had planted over 40 flower gardens throughout Boone, which they also maintained. The club continues to care for this beautiful pollinator garden for walkers and runners to enjoy.
Margret Coffey Memorial Garden
The Margret Coffey Memorial Garden is located on the grounds of the Jones House in downtown Boone. Plantings surrounding the gazebo were removed during recent renovations to the Jones House and the Club is still in negotiations with the Town of Boone regarding replacements.
Carrie Winkler Garden
Carrie Winkler Memorial Garden was founded by the Blue Ridge Garden Club of Boone in honor of long-time member, Carrie Winkler, who served Boone and the gardening community for many years. The Winklers owned much of the land in and around the Horn and the West until the family sold the property. Carrie maintained the garden until she passed away.
In 2018, Blue Ridge Garden Club of Boone regained, from the Town of Boone, maintenance of the long existing Carrie Winkler Garden. At that time the club started placing new plantings in the garden. A team of 4 members totally replanted, nurtured and redesigned this peaceful memorial garden; bringing it back to its original beauty with renewed vibrancy and life for all of the community to enjoy. This garden is located between Strawberry Hill and across from the Farmer's Market/Horn in West parking lot.
Seby B. Jones Cancer Center Garden
Among the many contributions made to our community, is the beautiful garden outside Seby B. Jones Oncology Center. This area has been a haven for birds, butterflies, and beautiful flowers. The garden can be viewed through the oncology floor of the Seby B. Jones Center and also accessed outside along the left side of the building. The garden boasts colorful hanging baskets in the spring and summer and is decorated in conjunction with the seasons to bring joy to patients year and staff year-round. The club also delivers fresh vases of flowers for the waiting rooms weekly. It is our joy to bring beauty to those who are battling cancer through this special garden.
